What is CrossFit? Is it Hiit?
CrossFit was founded in the early 2000s by Greg Glassman, a former gymnast who believed that true fitness meant being prepared for the unknown and the unknowable. He combined elements of weightlifting, gymnastics, and high-intensity cardio into short, intense workouts — and shared them online as the Workout of the Day (WOD).
What started as a small training method quickly grew into a global movement. By 2005, there were a handful of CrossFit affiliates. Today, there are more than 15,000 gyms worldwide, with millions of people embracing the CrossFit lifestyle — from everyday women looking to feel stronger to elite athletes competing at the CrossFit Games.
The reason for its success? It delivers results — not just in appearance, but in strength, confidence, and performance.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that combines elements of weightlifting, cardio, and bodyweight training into constantly varied, functional workouts. Each session (known as a WOD, or Workout of the Day) is different, and designed to improve overall fitness — not just one area.
It’s a functional strength training program that began in 1996. CrossFit exercises are considered strength-building conditioning. They incorporate functional movements that build stamina, strength, and speed, among several other areas. Functional movements mimic things you do outside the gym, such as climbing the stairs or lifting objects
Some CrossFitters claim that the high-intensity training program is the best and fastest route to physical health. Others emphasize the risk of injury, so it's important to properly warm up and avoid CrossFit if you have pain
What does a CrossFit class look like?
A typical session includes:
A warm-up
Strength or skill training (e.g. deadlifts, pull-ups)
The WOD (e.g. 3 rounds: 10 kettlebell swings, 15 box jumps, 400m run)
A cooldown or mobility work
It’s high-energy, often timed, and usually done in a group setting.
Why is CrossFit so popular?
Community-driven — people train together and support each other
Scalable — workouts can be adapted for all levels
Goal-oriented — track your lifts, progressions, and times
Women are increasingly drawn to CrossFit for the strength focus and empowering atmosphere.
Is CrossFit right for you?
Choose CrossFit if you:
Thrive on variety and intensity
Want to lift heavier, move better, and train hard

Just be sure to start slow and prioritise technique — the culture is fast-paced, but your safety matters most.
strong, social and goal-focused
CrossFit is more than a workout — it’s a culture. If you love lifting, sweating, and being part of something bigger, it could be your perfect fit.
CrossFit isn’t just about lifting weights or sweating through a WOD. It’s about pushing your limits, discovering what your body is capable of, and joining a community that celebrates progress over perfection.
Whether your goal is to build strength, improve endurance, or simply feel more confident in your own skin, CrossFit offers a structure that’s both challenging and empowering — especially for women who want to feel strong, capable, and supported.
If you’re ready to break out of your comfort zone and try something that transforms more than just your body, CrossFit could be your next bold step. And if you're new to training or want guidance on where to begin, working with a coach who understands your journey makes all the difference.
